Sadly in this economy, I, along with the rest of my fellow graduates, are finding ourselves back at home working a part-time retail or hospitality job just to help pay off our student loans we have accrued over our collegiate years. You begin to think that you should've picked up another internship as opposed to going on that summer trip to Italy or wished that you had trudged through that "hard science" major.
In the words of my father: "woulda, coulda, shoulda".
You can't do much to change the past...
Well, after reading this fairly pessimistic first paragraph, I don't blame you if you want to stop reading, but I would advise you to continue. (I promise it gets better!)
Personally, college was a time for me to find myself as a person. I learned what my strengths and weakness are, how to hone in those strengths to my advantage and improve those weaknesses. I enjoyed every minute of my major (even writing that godforsaken 67 page thesis on the Elderly Population at Senior Centers) and wouldn't have chosen otherwise. I began my Junior year of college thinking that I wanted to become a lawyer and took all the proper steps in getting myself into a decent law school, but since then I have totally changed my mind. There is something about no job security due to the influx of students graduating law school and the 250k price tag that doesn't sit well in my mind or in my gut.
...But you can always change your future.
Recent pondering about my skills has driven me in to the world of business. It's a rough road trying to find that dream career. I have realized that the self-searching doesn't stop after college, and I thoroughly believe that it shouldn't! So currently, I am in the process of applying for jobs that will lead in to my dream career: Marketing. It's a difficult process, but you can never let one bad interview or no-call back bring you down. There is always a fit for you somewhere in the job world, it just hasn't found you yet. When you least expect it, a job post somewhere will appear and you will jump for joy. And hey, it may be your destiny! So apply already. :)
Helpful hints to all the graduates and soon to be graduates:
- Never give up on your dreams.
- Don't be too scared to apply for that dream job.
- Stop taking yourself too seriously. geezlouise, just laugh a little!
- Companies are looking for potential employees that will be passionate about the work they do. If you're not enthused by the job, do not bother to apply. Find something you will love to do. Find your Passion.
